SUPERLATIFS  

    1.Description:

                              This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

                beautiful: adj long car >deux syllabes donc:  the most + adj long.

    2.Construction:

             * supériorité: adj/adv court: 1 syllabe: ex: the smallest; the biggest, ...      

                                                        2 syllabes en -y: the happiest   

                                                                            -er: the cleverest

                                                         = THE + ADJ-EST

                                  adj/adv long: 2 syllabes ou + ; ex: the most handsome

                                                         = THE MOST + ADJ.

                                                          Zoe is the most beautiful girl in the school.

                * infériorité: adj. long = THE LEAST + ADJ

                                       These are the least expensive shoes I' ve ever bought.

    3. Formes irrégulières:

                           - good: the best

                           - bad: the worst

                           - far: the farthest / the furthest

                           - old: the eldest ( l'aîné de 3 et + ) ( autre sens: the oldest: le + âgé ).

    4. Orthographe:

                            - On redouble la consonne finale qui suit une voyelle simple quand la dernière                                  syllabe est accentuée:

                                    big: the biggest

                                    fat: the fattest

                             -"y" devient "i" devant -est:

                                    happy: the happiest

    5. Quelle préposition après un superlatif?

                              -"of" + nombre: Camilla is the smallest of the three sisters.

                              -"of" + temps: It' s the most beautiful day of my life.

                              -"in" + lieu: It' s the largest city in the U.S.A.
